Wine Tasting Tonight

You can still come by...

Wines

Reds

2001 Hartwell Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

This Cabernet Sauvignon is the ultimate expression of our hillside estate in the Stags Leap district. The excitement surrounding the 2001 vintage is of the nearly ideal growing conditions that delivered ripe fruit with varietal character. This is reflected in a glass of our 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine exhibits great density and a dark, ruby color. Focused aromas of ripe blueberry and blackberry mingle with notes of mocha, nutmeg, and wet stone. The tannins are forward, but not aggressive, providing a sturdy framework on which this wine will age for years to come. This wine offers power and elegance, and should continue to evolve for 10-15 years.

Suggested Retail - $50-$60

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2001

Brunello di Montalcino was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for aging. Under the direction of master winemakers, Banfi's Sangiovese grapes are transformed into a remarkable world-class wine, perhaps the most respected red of Italy. Aged for a total of up to four years, including a minimum of two years in oak barrels, Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of robust character. It possesses a rich garnet color, and a depth, complexity and opulence that is softened by an elegant, lingering aftertaste. Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino's regal qualities are best exhibited with game, red meats, roasts, hearty stews and rich powerful cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano..

Suggested Retail - $55-$65

Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres Gran Reserva

Intense, dark cherry-red colour. Complex bouquet that reveals a splendid balance of mature fruit and a delicate touch of spice (vanilla, refined leather) from the French oak. Powerfull in the mouth with sensations of fleshy, crystallized fruit that highlight a pleasant fullness in which the slightly toasted notes from the wood are perfectly integrated. A very elegant wine that promises to develop splendidly in bottle. An ideal wine to accompany game dishes in sauces or ragout, lamb or beef with spices (roast, stewed or grilled), and mature or blue cheese.

Whites

Trinitas Carneros Chardonnay 2007

Our 2007 Carneros Chardonnay is the quintessential California Chardonnay. This wine was 100% barrel fermented, sur lie aged, and has completed 100% malolactic fermentation. It displays classid romas of lemon, green apple, pear, butter vanilla and toast. Shows a ripe, smoky, mature mix of flavors, with toasty oak, ripe fig and melon, ending with tart sour lemon notes. Medium-weight. Drink now.

Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 2008

This dry white wine is pale straw-yellow in color. The clean, intense aroma and dry flavour with pleasant golden apple aftertaste make Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a wine of great character and versatility. In 1961, the Santa Margherita oenologist had what proved to be a brilliant idea. He decided to try the white vinification technique used for the production of French Champagne on the best Pinot Grigio grapes from Trentino-Alto Adige. This led to the creation of an innovative white wine which, with its fresh aroma and silky taste, created a new fashion in white wine drinking. This wine has since continued to gain in popularity both in Italy and abroad, maintaining a clear leadership in the Pinot Grigio D.O.C. category. Santa Margherita was the first company to vinify the pinkish Pinot Grigio grapes as white wine. Excellent as an aperitif, ideal accompaniment to seafood salads and fish- and shellfish-based pasta and rice courses. Perfect with white meats and boiled or grilled fish and with soufflés.

Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres Satinela

Very bright straw colour. Attractive bouquet combining lively notes of exotic fruit, apples (Coxs orange), and a hint of grapefruit in the background. Full in the mouth with delicious fruit flavours (apple,s pears, white peaches). Its silky unctuous characteristic is enlivened by a refined acidity making the wine pleasantly light. This wines delicate sweetness is hardly perceptible. Serve chilled as a delicious aperitif of as a creative match for appetizers such as canapés, weet and sour dishes, curries, oriental cuisine and cheese (goat and blue). It also balances nicely with light desserts.

WLCC DVD on The Web

Good News.

The WLCC promotional DVD is done. Physical copies will be around in a few days I would imagine.

It has been uploaded to youtube for starters. This gives members a new and cost effective means to help promote the club to far away friends and acquaintances not previously available.

What You Can Do for The Club With Youtube
*At the bottom of this posting is a small postal envelope, . Left click will open a new window which will allow you to email this page to friends without opening your mail program.

*Or you may send a link to the WLCC youtube page here, http://www.youtube.com/user/TheWLCC. Not as pretty.

*Members who have FaceBook or other social networks that allow videos to be embedded are certainly welcome to do so. In the lower right corner of the player is a small box. Left click will open a field that contains the code to "embed". Simply right click, select all, and copy.

*Then paste the html into the appropriate section of your web page or social network.

*What will appear is something like the player below.

*Have fun, spread it around, embed in your web pages, and so forth. The WLCC website will be edited soon for the video. When that is done, you may of course send a link to that page as another option.

Video will probably not display in email subscriptions. Click here if you are reading this in email and are unable to see the video.

July 6 Update: Course Conditions:

Well, it doesn't take much more than a week of low humidity, sustained winds and no rain fall to make me question when the next rainfall will come.

We did receive a timely 1/4 inch of rain Sunday night, so the greens should be ok till the middle of the week. The extended forecast is giving 30% to 40% chance of rain each day thru Wednesday, so maybe we will get much needed moisture.

Keeping up with rainfall and other moisture related issues is just goes along with the territory if you are a golf course superintendent. Here at WLCC it is very important given we do not have an irrigation system.

On days like last week with humidity levels in the 20 to 30 percent range, high winds, and sunlight, the turf can start to hurt very quickly. Hence the need to supplement between rain events. This year should be a prime example of what an irrigation system would do for turf conditions on the golf course.

Even though we are getting a shower here and there, the fairways and rough areas are still stressing. Be sure while you are driving your cart not to make abrupt turns or stops which damage the turf.

As the cash register starts to ring with more rounds of golf be sure that you and your guests are being good stewards of the course by replacing and/or filling divots on the tee boxes and fairways, and fixing your ball marks on the greens. It doesn't take much time to ensure the golf course you leave behind you as you play is one the golfer behind you can enjoy.

From the feedback I am getting, the majority of the members are pleased with the conditions on the course. My staff and I are working hard to produce playing conditions you the members can be proud of on a daily basis. No doubt you will see the staff on the course as you make your way around. Let them know you appreciate their hard work if you have the opportunity.

Thanks,

David Letterman II

Program Announced Here.

Past Meetings
August 12
Wolf Laurel Historical Society proudly presents Dr. George Stuart, Senior Archaeologist (Retired), from National Geographic. He is going to give a general introduction to the archaeology of the WNC region and show some artifacts.

George Stuart is the founder of the Boundary End Archaeology Resource Center, which is located near Barnardsville. It is a 501(c)(3) organization which promotes research in Ancient American/Native American Studies.

He was the Senior Archaeologist for National Geographic for more than 38 years and he is known worldwide as the leading authority on the Mayan Civilization and Culture.

At last year’s WLHS September program he talked about Maya Civilization, the Maya Long Count Calendar and the Maya Calendar of Prophecy.

His artifacts are in museums around the country, including the Smithsonian. George and his wife Melinda are our neighbors across the mountains in the Big Ivy Community and he is Vice President of the Big Ivy Historical Society.

Everyone is welcome to attend this program at 4 pm in the WLCC old bar.

July 8

Featured guest will be Gera Girard, an artist and writer, who did the illustrations for “Upper Laurel and Her People” by Delia Tipton Brittain.

Gera will share tales from her own book called "Cousins." It has a lot of stories in it that Delia told her about her family. We are having the Upper Laurel book reprinted this summer and hope to have them in time for sale at this meeting. If not, we will gladly take orders.
