Superintendent's Update

From The Course Superintendent
06/17/09

The Golf Maintenance Staff is readying the Course for the upcoming Member-Guest Tournament June 18-20. With our limited staff, we have been working overtime all this week to get the Course in tip-top shape.

Greenville Turf and Tractor our local John Deere Equipment Distributor has brought us 2 pieces of equipment to demo all this week.

One of the pieces is a fairway unit similar to the one we are currently using. Having 3 mowers, we can complete the mowing of all the fairways in 3.5 hours as opposed to the normal 8 hours allowing our staff to multi-task with the extra time saved.

The 2nd piece of equipment is a greens and tee surrounds mower that has (3) individual mower decks combining up to 68 inches, instead of the (1) 60 inch deck mower we are currently using.

This mower not only contours to the ground providing a much smoother transition from the collars to the surrounding rough areas, but eliminates 50% of the hand labor around the green and tee complexes which we normally push mow or weedeat.

The opportunity to demo the equipment for a week gives me time to personally operate each piece to evaluate it's strengths and weaknesses in real world conditions. This in turn lets me make educated decisions about any future equipment purchases to insure we have the most efficient equipment for our terrain.

I hope the Members and Guests find the Course Conditions to your liking. If you do and you see one of the Golf Maintenance Staff on the course, take the time to let them know you appreciate their efforts. I bet a few accolades would mean much more to the staff than hearing it from their supervisor.
