February Calendar

The Winter Program has been pretty slow...due to Winter in all its glory. Freezing temperatures, slippery roads, and folks who basically want to stay home by the fire. Who could blame them??

"Fridays at Five" have still been popular, and we will continue to be open each Friday throughout February, Feb. 5, 12,19 and 26.

Rethinking Dinners: As we have not had enough participation to have Dinners on Saturdays, we will be having just one in February.
Valentines Dinner and Party on Saturday, Feb.13. Please note that you do not need a date to enjoy our party!
There's enough loving floating around for everyone.

Except for Feb. 13, WLCC will be closed on Saturdays through Feb.

If anyone wants to plan a special party any night, just let me know and we'll make it happen. We'd be happy to open the Club for your occasion.

Course Superintendent: Update

Wow! If there ever was a “Winter Wonderland”, I believe the Wolf Laurel may be one. This is my first week back after a couple weeks vacation during the Christmas and New Year Holidays and I can’t believe the amount of snow that we still have on the ground. Here at the golf maintenance facility, we have at least 12 inches, so I know that up on top there has to be much more than that.

The main roads leading into WLCC aren’t that bad, but turn off on a side road and you may find yourself walking the rest of the way to your destination. The golf maintenance staff generally will make a couple trips around the mountain daily checking the golf course from the side roads just to make sure that everything is ok.

Occasionally along the way we have to stop to help someone who has slid into a ditch or to remind the occasional group of people that sledding on the golf course, especially the greens, is not allowed. However, with all the snow and ice that still remains, I have had second thoughts about driving back to a remote area and not being able to get back to the warmth of my office.

Recently I spoke with Harold Tipton, who heads up Road Maintenance, about the snow that fell during our recent “blizzard” before Christmas. December 18, 2009 the day that the bottom dropped out, the average snowfall was 24 inches with reports in various places on the mountain of up to 30 inches.

According to the farmer’s almanac, this winter is to be one of the harshest winters in years. Normally, I do not put much faith in such, but this year in think they may be on to something. This type of weather sure puts a damper on the whole global warming idea. Don’t you think?

Calendar: January, 2010

Well, December's weather wasn't as cooperative as we would have liked, but we were able to open most of the Friday nights for our ever-popular "Fridays at Five." New Years Eve was great fun with Freddie Bucks Rocking Jazz Trio...as usual, we had an early night with our "Toast" at 10:30!!!

We will again set the schedule for January with the hopes that we'll be able to serve dinners on each Saturday. Please remember we need a minimum of 15 people to have dinner, and if we have to cancel, the Club will not be open. Make sure when you make your dinner reservation (by 5 pm Thursdays) that you leave your phone number in case of weather, etc.

Roads Alert: WLCC Closed Tonight

Uh oh, unpaved roads are really poor at 1:15 PM.

The Club will be closed January 1 and 2, 2010.
