Lester Wallace Salute

Lester Wallace Salute

This year Wolf Laurel has lost some wonderful long time residents, each of whom has positively influenced our community with his or her own brand of personality and individualism.  One passing, in particular, almost escaped our knowledge.

Lester Wallace most recently of 100 Hampton Gap and prior to that, Eagle’s Nest, died on May 25, two days after celebrating his 97th birthday.

Wolf Laurel Country Club members from 1997 may remember assisting Lester and his wife, Mildred, as they rushed in and out of the club, removing countless golf bags, in an attempt to save them from being padlocked inside a bankrupt club. Others may remember Les for the dramatic story of his survival of the USS Mt Hood explosion in 1944. Still others may recall the excellent parties he, Mildred and Mac Miller would throw to celebrate whatever occasion was handy!  On an even more poignant note, they may be reminded of the time Les and Mac joined generously forces to purchase, at auction, the home of a Wolf Laurel resident and friend, thereby allowing him to spend his last years in dignity.

Personally, I will always remember a fine man, who even as his body was letting him down, had a razor sharp mind which thrived on stock reports, world news and lively conversation. My final memory is of a “take out” dinner Wayne and I took to share with the Wallaces during the last year Les was able to make the trip to Wolf Laurel.. What an evening; a joyful, raucous time was had by all!

In closing, I feel I can speak for all who knew Lester Wallace, as I salute the positive impact he and Mildred had on our beloved community.

The Annual WLCC Harvest Festival is on
Saturday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Hope all of you will attend and bring any guests
who may be visiting on this fun Labor Day
weekend. The Festival is open to all so spread
the word around the mountain and encourage
everyone to come!

There will be a lunch buffet from 11:30 – 1:00
serving hamburgers with all the fixings, salads,
chips, drink and dessert for $8.00 for adults
and $4.00 for children 10 and under.  You can
charge lunch to your club account.

To add to your shopping and dining pleasure
music will be provided by our own Fred Buck.

Get your Christmas shopping list together and
come and see the beautiful and unique items
that our 2012 exhibitors have to offer. Some of
your favorite vendors are back along with some
new ones with exciting and different goods to
purchase.  This year we have some beautiful
items from Africa made by artisans who might
otherwise be resigned to a life of poverty.  All
proceeds from these sales goes toward sending
teens in Africa to Young Life camp to hear the
salvation story which can bring hope to lives
where there is no future.  We also have some
wonderful metalwork (wolf heads, etc.) this
year and some interesting mobiles.  Make sure
you come and see the beautiful hand-woven
and painted scarves, the beeswax ornaments
and the new mixed media fine art objects.
Our vendors love coming to Wolf Laurel mainly
because of the friendly and welcoming
customers.  Thanks for that and for making
the Festival such  an enjoyable and successful
event year after year.

See you there !!!

Wild Wild West Party Photos

If you missed the Wild Wild West Party on August 11th you missed quite a shindig as our country club was turned into  the Grey Wolf Saloon.

Mary Alice Veal, Mary Lou Woodiwiss, Suzanne Beers, Crystal McMurray, and Stephannie Suarez

Simple Folk provided music for line-dancing which was led by Kippy Capers and Mary Alice Veal.

Sheriff Roy McMurray was busy keeping ruffians off the streets and the jail was full!

The evening was interrupted by an entertaining shoot-out between Sheriff Roy and Dead-Eye Dick, aka Richard Jennings.

Thanks to Suzanne Beers, Mary Lou Woodiwiss and their committee for planning such a fun event.  In fact it was so much fun that the social committee has already decided to do this again next August, so start gathering up your western gear.

In the meantime, hope you enjoyed pictures of highlights from this year's Wild Wild West Party.

Firewood Arbor Restoration Saturday, Sept. 1st

August 10, 2012

To: Wolf Laurel CC Membership
From: Jerry Isom
Subject: Firewood from Arbor Restoration

The Arbor Restoration project for the 2012 season has been completed. If you have not been on our golf course, your next round will include noticeable changes to the safety and playability of certain of our holes.  The work includes clearer views to the landing areas and certain greens on holes 1, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 14.  Next year we plan to complete similar work on holes 6, 8 (left side of fairway from the 150 yard marker to the green), 16 and 17. Please recognize that the foliage and growth on the trimmed trees and shrubs will eventually fill in.

Many of the logs have been saved for use by our members and our employees for heating their homes this winter.  We are targeting September 1st as the date when those members, who are interested, may begin picking up the logs from our staging area. David Letterman and his team are stacking the wood in a central area close to the golf course maintenance building, where it can be easily picked up. To ally some of our costs, we will be asking for contributions of $50 per pick-up truck bed load (no ton trucks) with a limit of one truckload per membership until each of our members has had an opportunity to obtain this quantity. The logs will be available beginning September 1st on a first come basis until the supply runs out.  If there is still a supply available after November 1st, you may help yourself to the remainder with consideration of an added donation. You will have to use your own vehicle and labor, when picking up your load.   If you do not have a vehicle to haul your own wood or are unable to split and load the wood on your own, contact David Letterman (284-0479 or dlwlcc@ccvn.com) and provision will be made for a load to be delivered to your home for an additional fee.  Please make your checks payable to “Wolf Laurel Country Club.” We will use the funds collected for golf course maintenance related projects.

We have been asked to wait to begin picking up any of the logs until September 1st in order for David Letterman and his folks to stage and inventory the wood. Please see David or one of his people and make payment at the maintenance office before loading.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and consideration of the process we are using in an effort to be fair to all.

Thank you.
