Office Memo: All Members

Mailing Addresses:

Please keep the Office updated of any changes regarding mailing addresses for statements, news and other vital information.

Payments:

Please note your WLCC account number on your check for fast and accurate posting or send in the remittance from your statement.

Cancellation Policy:

The 48 hour cancellation policy that the Board approved during the 2006 season is still in effect. Staffing and food purchases for Club events are organized by the total of participants and if you are not able to keep your reservations, it is very important to notify the Club by calling either the restaurant at 680-9773 or the Administrative office at 680-9771, so that we can offer the open reservation to another member. Many parties sell out and there is a waiting list of members that would like to participate. Please let us know if you are not able to keep your reservation for any particular event. Unfortunately, the Club must cover their expenses and will charge those that do not show or call to cancel prior to the 48 hour cutoff.

Sponsored Guest Authorizations:

Members are encouraged to contact Administration when friends and family are coming to visit on the mountain and have permission to use your membership for dining and golfing pleasure. Please supply their name, date(s) of their stay and if they will be charging to your account directly or using a credit card during their stay. This assists the wait staff and pro shop with advance notice that these are your guests and to serve them accordingly.

Thank you,

Office Staff

The Need For Reservations

Here is an email from our Dining Manager on the need to make reservations early:

Please let everyone know that I apologize for turning people away on Saturday night, (June 13), and last night, (June 16), due to them not having reservations.

We had a full house on Saturday, and 95 last night, but because of the the low number of reservations at 3:30, (52), we only had 2 waitstaff, and then by 6:00 we had 95 reservations for dining. Please stress my apologies, and the great importance this year of early reservations for staffing due to the budget.
Thanks.

Superintendent's Update

From The Course Superintendent
06/17/09

The Golf Maintenance Staff is readying the Course for the upcoming Member-Guest Tournament June 18-20. With our limited staff, we have been working overtime all this week to get the Course in tip-top shape.

Greenville Turf and Tractor our local John Deere Equipment Distributor has brought us 2 pieces of equipment to demo all this week.

One of the pieces is a fairway unit similar to the one we are currently using. Having 3 mowers, we can complete the mowing of all the fairways in 3.5 hours as opposed to the normal 8 hours allowing our staff to multi-task with the extra time saved.

The 2nd piece of equipment is a greens and tee surrounds mower that has (3) individual mower decks combining up to 68 inches, instead of the (1) 60 inch deck mower we are currently using.

This mower not only contours to the ground providing a much smoother transition from the collars to the surrounding rough areas, but eliminates 50% of the hand labor around the green and tee complexes which we normally push mow or weedeat.

The opportunity to demo the equipment for a week gives me time to personally operate each piece to evaluate it's strengths and weaknesses in real world conditions. This in turn lets me make educated decisions about any future equipment purchases to insure we have the most efficient equipment for our terrain.

I hope the Members and Guests find the Course Conditions to your liking. If you do and you see one of the Golf Maintenance Staff on the course, take the time to let them know you appreciate their efforts. I bet a few accolades would mean much more to the staff than hearing it from their supervisor.

As always if you have any questions or comments you can contact me at:
dlwlcc (AT) ccvn (DOT) com
or by phone, 828-680-9775

Important Public Service Announcement

From The Editor

I received an email today, (dated yesterday), from a resident and Club Member, a person known to me, sending some photos to the blog. These are items I get somewhat routinely from members, so despite the fact that Gmail placed it in spam, I clicked the link. Bad move as it turns out.

The photos were supposedly at "tagged dot com".

The site gave me the option to sign in with the blog's Google account, how convenient, but another bad move. This means in retrospect that the blog password was literally handed over to them, but not for long. Read on.

I did not really raise my antennae until about 15 seconds into the site it showed me a list of 48 "friends", many of whom I recognized as coming from the blog inbox.

This site had read the blog's email inbox! I exited the site at that point, and had not clicked any invite or send buttons.

Incidentally, there were many names from around the mountain I recognized that had never written to the blog, so the site presumably read the inbox of my sender, and more of us?

After 3 minutes of Googling about tagged dot com, I changed the blog password, and its fundamental pattern on the keyboard. I have only skimmed google but here goes....

About tagged dot com
From Wikipedia: They are regarded as phishers and spammers, though not quite.
From Snopes.com: Snopes explains the likenesses to a scam or virus, but in the end calls them "disingenious", since it seems they do not actually install malicious software on a machine.
Needless to say they get an "F" from the BBB.
Tagged dot com is a Microsoft partner. holy cow.

If you logged into tagged dot com, change the password to your email account. The site will apparently log into your account and send spam to everyone in your address books or inboxes as though it were you.

My Feelings
Since I exited the site rather than contact my 48 "friends", and changed my password to "wlccblog at gmail", I am assuming no one is harmed by my actions.

The site did however read the blog's inbox, just as it appears to have read the inbox of the person who "sent" me pictures, and who knows who else's inboxes.

Change your passwords.

Golf Course Update

From The Course Superintendent
06/01/09

I have been getting many interesting questions about the Golf Course as of late and wanted to give an explanation to a couple of the ones I have heard most often.

If you didn’t know, we have been averaging around 3 inches of rain per week over the last 4 weeks, so my staff and I have to adjust the way we maintain the course on a daily basis.

Here are a couple of points to consider with all the rain we are getting:

*Our 8 wheeled slope mowers have to mow areas normally mowed by our wide-area rough mower on most of the golf course. This prevents the rough from getting cut as often as we would like.

*Moving the cups when it is extremely wet is not generally a good idea as it makes a mess of the new hole. If we are not receiving play, then we leave the cup in the old spot until the greens have dried sufficient to move the pin even if it takes 2 to 3 days.

*The 10th and 18th fairways in particular, have wet weather springs that have surfaced due to the abundance of rain. This is not surface water but ground water that has made its way to the top. Please avoid these areas that are marked with white flags as it will cause considerable damage if you drive thru the area.

*The maintenance staff is currently weighing the options to drain the water from the course in the least invasive and most economical way possible to sustain cart traffic and speed of play in these areas.

*We have been pushing the greens to grow with nitrogen fertility to help them recover after spring aeration and severe winter desiccation. Unfortunately the amount of rain we are getting causes them to grow at a faster rate than expected.

*Also, the Poa annua aspect of our greens has seeded profusely the last 3 weeks. All this adds up to slow greens! We put down our first application of growth regulator last Friday (May 21), so with a few days of dry weather, they will speed up.

Given a few days of dry weather I feel the golf course will be back to its old self again. Thank you for your time.
