Tea Time Again: 08/11/08

Hello Everyone,

We hope your summer is going swimmingly, and for today, we wanted to fill you in on some details about our Tea Parties for the Grand Player Piano.

Thanks to all who attended and supported this effort at our very successful July Party. We thought it was important to talk about the monetary parts of these Parties and Drawing Prizes.

For each party, we want everyone to know that food and drink are donated by the hosts. The Drawing Prizes have also been donated by The Beneke's. As such, your contributions go to the Piano Fund on a 100% basis!

The August Party
The theme for August will be "MarTEAni Time” because the Drawing Prize will be a set of six gorgeous, hand blown, Rio Light Martini Glasses, an $85.00 value, from Uncommon Goods.

Here are the specifics:
*August 11, at 6:30pm
* Our Gracious Hosts: The Jenkins' on Pisgah Pass
*Cost: $15 at door, $5 door prize drawing optional
* Reservations: Please call Meg at 680 9771 as there is a guest quota for this affair.

Can't Make The August Party?
*On September 8 we will have the mysterious and aptly named “MysTEAcal” Tea Party hosted by the Howard's, who have hired a psychic to read tea-leaves.

*Then on October 20 it's a Hillbilly Tea, hosted by the Veals. Stay tuned here for details.

Please consider joining us on any of these Mondays, when the Club is closed for relaxation, fun and friends.

General Manager's Update

By George Barrett, CCM

The summer is flying by quickly and what fun we have had, but it is only the beginning!

We all enjoyed the Mens' Member-Guest Golf Tournament of June, the Super 4th of July celebration with its golf cart floats and the other festivities and we thank all of the members who supported the Annual Hospice Golf Tournament, auction and dinner.

However, the Best is ahead, here is an overview, but stay tuned to the WLCC BB as we implement each item below.

First, mark your calendar for the Annual Margaritaville Party on August 16, with entertainment by The Crew Band and of course, the famous Caribbean Buffet, all for $42 per person. It will be fun and the Margaritas will be flowing. Don’t miss out, sign up early before it’s too late to get a reservation.

Starting Thursday August 7
Speaking of fun, we will add another Pub Night each week with that famous free glass of house wine to compliment your dinners on Thursday, so if you miss Pub Night on Tuesdays, you can still come on Thursday.

Starting Wednesday August 6
We have previously introduced some items to beef up Wednesdays, which have traditionally been the Club’s slowest night. We are still full steam ahead on Game Nights, Cigar Nights, and so forth, but we have come up with yet a new addition for Wednesdays.

The regular menu will not be offered on Wednesdays, but we will feature a Pizza to Go Night with $5, $10 and $15 pizzas, as well as with Fish n’ Chips at $9.95 and Fried Chicken. The Bar Menu will also be available. We hope this new program will increase sales on Wednesday nights.

The Lounge of course has a Drink Special every day, but this will compliment the usual Wednesday deal of ½ price on all drinks. The dining room will be closed, but The Lounge will be open, as well as the deck for the over flow, or members who wish to eat outside, and of course, we will have the Take Out option.

Upgrading The Bar Menu: Wednesdays in August
The Bar Menu will expand again to include our famous Wolf Laurel Burger. We are introducing several new items including a Reuben, Steak & Cheese Sub, plus Pizza and Chicken in the Basket.

To keep you informed I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the upcoming General Membership meeting on September 13th at 9:00 AM in the Club’s dining room. This is an important meeting to approve several necessary bylaw changes that will keep our bylaws current and in tune with our changing times.

Also a great President’s Cocktail Party and Dinner Show is planned for September 20th…so put it on your calendar. The Dinner show will feature Stephen Freeman, “Echoes of a Legend”, who does the best rendition of Elvis I have seen. He looks like Elvis and definitely sings like Elvis. It will be an exciting Dinner Show that will follow the gathering with the President.

Have a great month.

PS: If you haven’t heard, The Board approved our new corkage fee of $10, replacing the old $20 fee. So if you’re in the mood, bring in your own bottle of great wine, we will be glad to assist.

PPS: Please be kind to SART, this coming Sunday at 5:30 PM.

SART On The Mountain: 07/27/08

The Sart Guild is pleased to once again have their annual fundraiser at WLCC on Sunday, July 27th 2008. This is event is always a favorite for Club members, cast and crew.

The play being presented during this time at the theater is Smoke on the Mountain, Homecoming in conjunction with our event here at the club. Many of your favorites from the stage will be here for your enjoyment and I am certain that we can persuade Liz to sing some of your favorite songs......for a price, to be donated directly to SART.

Along with Liz will be Ben Starr Coates, Melissa Brobeck, who we all enjoyed, not only looking at but listening to last year. Brad Call and Ashley Manning along with Robert McDaniel and Jennifer Ariel. Perhaps some further surprises as we get closer to this event.

Cocktails will be at 5:30, followed by dinner at 6:30 followed by the performance. As in years past, the cost per person is $50.00 with the proceeds going to SART.

The menu includes, 10oz of Prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes, salad, veggies, rolls, coffee, tea and a surprise desert. If you are a club member, you can charge your account and if you are not a member of the country club, please call Carol Martin 689-5514. Other reservations can be made with Meg. Checks should be made payable to SART Guild and brought to the event.

We are all certainly looking forward to this event and hope that you will invite your friends and neighbors to enjoy this wonderful night on the mountain with good food, and a wonderful performance.

Any other questions may be directed to Carol Martin at 689-5514.

On The Importance Of Reservations

First, we would like to thank members for your cooperation in making reservations, it has been a great help.

Second, we would like to take a moment to explain why this is so important at anytime, not just for nights when we have big events.

We have two goals for The Club; to provide the best service that we can, and to control staffing costs. Your reservations can help us do this.

This season we have additional challenges; rising expenses for food, fuel surcharges from our suppliers, and more. We want to control payroll and keep our food and drink prices as low as possible.

Most of the time things go pretty well, but we do get surprises. When something like this happens, our service is definitely less than any of us would like.

We are a resort community, the idea is to have fun. We do not want to take away anyone's spur of the moment thoughts to come by The Club. That is the last thing we would ever want.

We are only asking as they say in the legal business, "to the maximum extent possible", help us help you by making reservations for dinner.

Slow nights, busy nights, big events, it can only make us better.

Thank You Everyone!

Love Wine? Love Hospice

Hospice Wine Tasting, This Friday!

A great opportunity to sample some elegant wines, enjoy good company, and love Hospice in the process.

Friday, July 18
From 5:30 – 7pm
Suggested minimum donation of $25
HOSPICE of MADISON COUNTY
For Reservations Please Call Meg @ 680-9771

Featuring These Specially Selected Wines

White Wines
2004 Grgich Hills Fume Blanc
Floral and citrus bouquet, exuberant ripe pink grapefruit, spice, and the brisk acidity that makes this wine such a good food partner on a warm summer day. An amazing concentration of flavors - mango, passion fruit, and a hit of guava.
Suggested Retail - $45-$50

2005 Ferrari Carano Chardonnay 2005
Fruit from four distinctly different growing regions in Sonoma County was selected by the winemaking team for this wine. This Chardonnay is a fruit-focused offering with tropical overtones of papaya andd mango supplemented by toasty almond flavors. It is a wonderfully complex wine with impressive balance an length.
Suggested Retail - $40-$45

2005 Kathryn Kennedy Sauvignon Blanc
The color is pure light straw, and the aromas are of white grapefruit, lilac and lemongrass. Flavors are lively green apple, lemongrass, mandarin lime, and gooseberry: and its slightly saline minerality adds impeccable elegance to the character. With its refreshingly tart grapefruit and clementine finish, swirled with a dollop of smoke, this wine would please even the most French of Pouilly Fumé or Sancerre lovers. It is also very akin to the finer New Zealand examples of this varietal: fresh, lively and juicy with acidity. It asks politely for a plate of oysters, a rock-shrimp, artichoke and caper cocktail, or perhaps a calamari salad with plenty of picholine olives, flat-leafed parsley and fresh lemon.
Suggested Retail - $25-$30

Red Wines
2006 Bouchaine Carneros Pinot Noir
Redolant of cherries and berries with a touch of earthiness and orange peel. Pairs well with anything smoked or grilled. Try it with blackened salmon, braised pork tenderloin, or mushrook risotto accented with truffle oil.
Suggested Retail - $60-$65

2005 Grgich Hills Zinfandel
Grgich Hills ages their Zinfandel in large oak casks so the flavors are well integrated but not overwhelmed by oak. The result is an irresistible mix of strawberries and raspberries with a hint of allspice that keeps evolving as the wine sits in the glass. Nicely balanced between acidity and alcohol, this medium-bodied Zinfandel’s forward fruit and soft tannins makes it a great match with grilled meats, pizza and pastas with tomato sauce.
Suggested Retail - $40-$45

2003 Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cabernet Sauvignon is rich with the flavors of ripe dark fruits and blueberries, surrounded by subtle hints of vanilla bean. The Cabernet is will structured with tannins that are soft and supple. This wine is perfectly suited for a rib eye or T-bone steak cooked to perfection and is also an excellent match with grilled scallops.
Suggested Retail - $40-$45

Time Out For Tea Anyone?

Hello Everyone,
It's almost mid-July, and the calendar for The Club has sure been a whirlwind of fun. But why not take a break this Monday, support a goal, and maybe win a unique prize along the way?

In the last part of June, we wrote about some upcoming fund raisers for a grand player piano. Amazingly, the first of these "tea parties" is nearly upon us. Here are some details.

Date: July 14, Monday
Time: 3:30pm
Theme: "PiTEA the Brits"
Place: 2933 El Miner Drive, The Beneke's
Cost: $15 at door, $5 door prize drawing optional
Reservations: Meg at club, no later than 7/11
Telephone: 828 680 9771

These events are meant to be smaller, slower, intimate, in home get togethers when The Club is closed. More like winters at The Clubhouse, the mood here is let’s just relax, chat, and get to know each other.

The drawing prize is really special:
It's a luxury gift box of tea, chocolates and goodies from the famed Fortnum & Mason of London. Since 1707, F and M has been the supplier of epicurean delights for all things elegant, from The Henley Regatta, to Ascot.

Our prize is entitled "Love in the Afternoon". It will not be delivered by horse and carriage, the way they do it across the pond, but we can promise some refined times with friends, old and new.

Please consider joining us,
Gwynne and John
