Fundraisers: Grand Player Piano

Hello Everyone,
We would like to give you some advance notice, as we have planned a series of fund raisers to purchase a player grand piano for The Club. John sent out an email earlier this month with some basic info, but here are some details.

Our July Party
Date: July 14, Monday
Time: 3:30pm
Theme: "PiTEA the Brits"
Place: 2933 El Miner Drive, John and Gwynne Beneke
Cost: $15 at door, $5 door prize drawing optional
Reservations: Meg at club, no later than 7/11
Telephone: 828 680 9771

The August party ("MarTEAni Time") will be held at Dwight and Janie Jenkins Home, on 8/11 at 6pm, a reminder will appear here.

The September party will be announced later, (9/8), and will be at Leslie Howard's home; she has hired a psychic from Asheville to read tea leaves!!

October will be at the Veals and early November at the Hunts.

If you have any questions, call or email me. These are fun/funky parties that give smaller groups the opportunity to gather for good food and company at members' homes, when the club is closed; and raise money for our own player piano, so this dancin' club can do it any time!

Thanks!

June 25: DVD Nostalgia in The Lounge

Don't forget Wednesday is also, The Rally for the Cure.

Wednesdays have been our slowest night of the week. In an effort to make them more attractive, we launched Wild on Wednesdays. The name of course is tongue in cheek, but no less enjoyable.

This Wednesday evening, our Daily Drink Special is half price on all drinks, starting at 5:00 PM, and at 7:30 PM, Nostalgia Night on DVD. It's around an hour, and lends itself well as a backdrop to good conversation, or delightful viewing.

The selection will be, Ella Fitzgerald in a captivating performance, recorded live at The Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969.

In the 1960's Ella was at the peak of her powers, and performed a wide range of material from pop and jazz. Here she is doing a Burt Bacharach favorite. For aficionados, that's The Tommy Flanagan Trio in support.

How To Submit Your Announcements To The WLCC BB

What Can We Submit?
Any official communications that normally go into print can be seen here first. We all know what these items are, business/events from committees, the President, the Board, and so forth.

Over the years, certain events have become Club-wide, and from time to time, new initiatives gain prominence. Any questions about a particular item for publication on this BB should be directed to the General Manager.

A Flashback to Grammar School
This may seem trite but, bear with us for a minute. If it doesn't do this, who, what, when, where, why, and how (much), it's not complete. Let's think about our new members, or members who are around on a less regular basis. We should probably adjust our thinking, and add some details or explanation that the rest of us just take for granted. We want to fully inform the widest audience we can.

The Ideal Format For Submitting Your Info
If we can set the following as a goal, it might well save time for you, and it will definitely save time for us.

1) Use Plain Text

Think about this as just composing an email first, as opposed to a MS Word attachment with formatting, bullet points, etc. This makes publishing to the BB nothing more than copy, paste, publish, and then the whole world knows about your announcement.

The formatting from a Word doc will not fit in the BB display, so it will need to be rearranged anyhow. You will still have your plain text, which you can then choose to copy, paste, and format for print versions, or, just leave it to the BB.

Feel free to enrich your content by including any pertinent links to web based information that will help inform other members. We will handle the hyperlinks for you.

2) Can We Use a Special Photo or Logo?

In a word, yes. But, remember those stickers in the days of VHS rentals? "Please be kind and rewind". Let's call ours, "Please be wise and resize".

You are more than welcome to include any special photo or logo, as long as we are not violating anyone's privacy. We only request that those images be in a common format, (jpeg, we like, gif is also fine), AND be resized to 160 pixels in width. These can be attached to your plain text email, and easily dropped into your announcement.

Readers view the BB in a number of ways such as email, on a homepage, in a reader, or by way of a bookmark. All of these are in varying screen resolutions. 160 pixels wide gives a nice display for everyone without making the text hard to follow.

Height is irrelevant, as most photo resizers, (such as the one in MS Office), automatically keep photos proportional anyway. Auto-Resizers will also compress the file size, so the BB loads on our screens in a timely way.

3) But We Like Print Shop?
We certainly don't want to increase anyone's workload. Projects from Print Shop, or similar applications are fine. Just send them along as an email attachment. There is no reason that a project from such applications cannot be used on the BB, as long as it answers the 5 W's from grammar school, and under the following conditions.

**NO PDF's
If there is a way for the BB to host PDF's we haven't found it. Even if there is, a PDF is a relatively huge file, (as we shall see), which requires our PC's to launch an external application, (Adobe Reader). The process is clunky to view, and more so if we download. PDF's are nice for multi page corporate presentations, but the vast majority of our projects are more like table cards, or one page flyers.

**Send Your Print Projects as an Image
Yep, no different than attaching a photo to your email. Here is how to convert your Print Shop item into an image, the process has to be similar in other softwares:

A) Next time you finish a piece in Print Shop, go to the File menu, and drop down your options. One of these is called "export" or "export as". In many versions, this option will be "grayed out", that is to say, it is not active if we try and use it.

B) We activate it by taking our cursor, and placing it at the edge of our project in the work space. Then left click one time, on the edge. Do nothing more.

C) Return to the File menu, click to bring the options down. The export function will now be in bold, that is to say it is active. Choose it.

D) In the dilaog box we will be able to choose the type of file we want to export the project as. Choose jpeg, give it a file name, and save. Then when you wish to submit to the BB, just attach that jepg as you would any other file or photo to an email.

Advantages
A jepg image of the monthly calendar is a file that is 95% smaller than a PDF of the same document. There is virtually no loss in quality, and it has a host of added flexibilities to promote the club and keep us informed. Take a look at this example of the June, 2008 calendar in jpeg format to see.

Your table card or flyer from Print Shop or similar applications will appear on this BB in the same way.

4) What is the Time Frame?
The automated emails go out at around 1:00 AM of the day after a notice is posted here. So, if you have some fast breaking news, we will need to receive it the day before. For other kinds of subscribers, say where the WLCC BB is delivered to a home page, the notification is much more instantaneous. People should get it the next time they log online.

5) Great, Where Should We Send Out Stuff?
Email for this BB is checked daily, send your email to the following address, shown here in anti spam format:

wlccblog (AT) gmail (DOT) com

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Wild on Wednesdays

OK, not really wild, but maybe we got your attention.

As you might know, Wednesday nights at The Club have traditionally been our slowest night of the week. So we wanted to let you know about a collection of features to make our midweek enticing.

All Drinks Half Price
That's not a typo, and the offer is good on any Wednesday evening. In fact every night of the week, The Lounge will have a daily drink special from 5:00 PM until closing. Here's what they look like for June. We will have a new set of Daily Drink Specials for July and August.

Game Nights
Our own Gaming Maven, MW, brings her expertise to the lounge on selected Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM, stay tuned here to be in the know. As this is being written, we have seen a dozen or more participants at her gatherings.

One never knows what she may have up her sleeve. So by all means consider coming by to see what kind of strategy, skill, or luck might grace our walls next. Maybe you have a little known or favorite game to suggest or add to the mix? Then drop her a line, or maybe leave a comment here. We will be sure to let her know.

Cigar Nights

This is something Ernie Kovacs or Arnold Schwarzenegger would appreciate, WLCC Cigar Nights on selected Wednesdays. The experience takes place on the deck outside The Lounge. With views of the highest peaks in the east, what a nice way to relax with friends.

We will be featuring new brandies, ports, and scotches to accompany those carefully chosen fine cigars as well.

Nostalgia Nights on DVD
Last season we made a few forays into vintage video footage of times past. Our jazzologist bar manager brought us Ella Fitzgerald in Berlin, and Sinatra Live with Basie and The Rat Pack, among other great film performances.

This is a nice way to unwind after dinner, and the event will return on selected Wednesdays in 2008. The DVD's usually run around an hour, and lend themselves well as a backdrop to good conversation. Perhaps you have a suggestion? Leave us a comment below.

Stay tuned here to find out what's happening on any Wednesday in 2008.

Spontaneity: Hike The Bald June 21

Not playing in the Men's Member Guest next week? Here is a wonderful impromptu event for anyone not playing on Saturday.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 21 to join the legendary Wolf Pack Hikers on any one of four variable distance, various difficulty Big Bald Hikes. There is even an option to drive to the summit to meet for a picnic lunch where everyone can participate.

Reservations are required. Sign up sheets, departure times, (different for each hike), and full details are available in the Pro Shop, or call 828 680 9772.

Be in the Know: Essential Big Bald Links
It's a mystery why some summits in the Southern Appalachians are forested, while others, even with identical conditions, exist as "balds".

Big Bald: At 5,516 feet in elevation is the highest point of what mountain range? Link includes topographic and satellite maps.

Big Bald: "One of the best views of any peak on the trail". This is a nice page which explores in words and images, Big Bald and its surroundings. That would be all 2,150 miles of The Appalachian Trail, in the view of one through hiker.

Are You a Birder?: Impress your friends after reading this excellent page on the ornithological importance of The Bald.

UPDATE: Date and Movie Night: June 13 at 730 PM

This info was unavailable for the last calendar update, so here we go. Scroll down for more near term events through Sunday June, 15.

This Friday, at 730 PM in the lounge, consider joining us after dinner for our second movie night of the year, The Bucket List, (2007), starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, Directed by Rob Reiner.

This is an end of life kind of story, about two men, diagnosed as terminal, who set out with a list of tasks to complete. It's "been liked by everyone who has seen it."

The trailer for the film is below. We will also have free popcorn, and "a bucket of beer", featuring domestic beers, 5 for 10$.

How You Can Use The Blog to Promote WLCC

This blog is cutting edge. At present, there are less than 100 country clubs in the US that have one.

It is hosted for free, flexible and interactive in ways that can promote the community that have not been used at Wolf Laurel before.

I wrote generally back in May, 2008 about why we think think the bulletin board is a great new tool. Let's turn our attention now to specific and useful things where you, the equity members, can help us improve and grow.

Club Promotion: The Ultra Easy Email Function
Below every article you will see an icon, , yep, that's a small postal envelope. Members may click on that, to open up a page which looks like this.

From there, you can easily email that article to friends or prospective members without having to use an email program or log into your mail account. Just enter the information and click the blue "Send" button and a pretty html email is on its way.  Never been easier.

Widgets
A widget is any kind of device that can be "embedded" into a blog and provides a function, such as WLCC slide shows and Club video to make it come alive, no matter when or where you are.

A Blog when properly used can be a living, breathing "brochure" for prospective members in a way no website or printed material can hope to accomplish.

Calendars, Events, Articles
Calendars and such will appear here, before the US Mail arrives, with membership informed by any number of free subscription methods.

Leaving Comments: A New Voice For Members
Below every article, there is a hyperlink for "comments". Readers may click there and a new, smaller window will open. In that window you can leave suggestions or any other thoughts on club business. This capability is anonymous, and all we ask is that your comments conform to this simple, common sense policy.

In Closing
Hopefully you are as excited as our staff is about this board and its functionality. We have more tools than ever now to be engaged, connected to each other, and to help you, the members, promote the Club.

Thanks,
Blog Editor

Sharing Photos?

We had some folks add some photos last night to the hot dog slide show. That's a nice example of how interactive this bulletin board can be, and how it might promote community and the Club.

The thought came about that maybe "hot dog etiquette" wasn't really the broadest theme in the world to share pictures, so here we go, a less defined slide show, in case you hesitated before.

Just note, this is a publicly viewable bulletin board, not every policy about it has been figured out yet. This hasn't happened, but be careful about adding photos that might violate someone's privacy. They might be denied, and we will err on the side of caution. Otherwise, share your pics, and have fun!

If the slide show stops, just hit the "X" below, or refresh your page.
